About the Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) System

Technical documentation

Purpose of AEC
The automatic exposure control (AEC) system is one of the key systems ensuring the quality of X-ray images. It continuously measures the amount of radiation reaching the image receptor and switches off the X-ray tube once the optimal exposure level is achieved.
Influencing Factors
Manual exposure selection is a complex task. The AEC system makes it possible to account for and compensate the influence of factors such as the type of image receptor, its sensitivity, X-ray beam quality (beam hardness), the degree of beam filtration, and the size and volume of the examined object.
Result
This enables high-quality imaging of the area of interest at the lowest possible patient radiation dose.
About the Exposure Measurement Chamber
Exposure measurement chambers are X-ray detectors used in automatic exposure control systems as sensors of transmitted radiation.
Placement
The chamber is installed directly in front of the image receptor, after the anti-scatter grid, and records all radiation incident on it. The X-ray receptor may be any type: film, a storage phosphor plate, or a solid-state detector/
Measurement Fields
In practice, the chamber consists of several independent X-ray detectors distributed across its area. Using multiple measurement fields allows their signals to be combined and the exposure to be optimized for a specific region of interest in the patient.
Key Features and Benefits
Process Automation
Eliminates the need for manual selection of exposure parameters based on reference tables.
Reduced Radiation Dose
Minimizes patient radiation dose by using only the necessary exposure time.
Image Quality
Ensures high-quality images without requiring advanced qualifications from the radiologic technologist.
Resource Efficiency
Reduces examination time, helps prevent diagnostic errors and inaccuracies, and saves consumables when using film.
